Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP)
An Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) is a legal document for children and young people aged up to 25, who need extra support with learning and development. It is legally binding, meaning that local authorities must ensure the needs outlined in the plan are met.
It describes a child’s needs and provides a framework for ensuring that the necessary support is in place to enable the child to achieve their goals and participate fully in education and community life.
EHCPs are usually applied for through your child’s school or nursery, with help from the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), although you can also request one yourself as a parent or carer. Requesting a a EHC assessment happens when a child's needs cannot be met and they require additional resources beyond what is typically available in a mainstream setting.
Not all children with SEND will need an EHCP, but for some, it can ensure the right kind of help is in place. The application process can feel complex, If you're unsure, your school’s SENCO can guide you, and there are charities and support groups that offer advice and guidance through the process (e.g. IPSEA, Sunshine Support).
